Velveteen Tabi, Black
¥6,600
In stock
Velveteen, known in Japan as betchin, came from Britain in the early Meiji period (the late 1800s). These tabi (Japanese split-toe socks) use it as the outer fabric, in black.
The fabric called betchin
The English word "velveteen" came to be pronounced "betchin" in Japanese, and was written with the characters 別珍. Its hallmark is a soft pile that is pleasant to the touch.
Three fabrics: outer, lining and sole
Velveteen on the outside, flannel for the lining and corduroy for the sole. We combine three fabrics of different textures in one pair.
Sewing reworked from the ground up
With a shortage of craftspeople making skills harder to pass on, fewer makers have produced velveteen tabi in recent years. This is a product we want to keep, so we reworked the sewing from the ground up and brought it back.
