¥6,600
In stock
Velveteen, which came from Britain in the early Meiji period (the late 1800s), in a deep golden brown. Tabi (Japanese split-toe socks) with a soft, piled outer.
Where the name betchin comes from
Velveteen came to Japan in the early Meiji period. The English word "velveteen" came to be pronounced "betchin" in Japanese, and was written with the characters 別珍. Its hallmark is a soft pile, and its feel sits well with winter clothes.
Flannel lining, corduroy sole
The velveteen outer is paired with a lining of brushed flannel, and the sole is corduroy.
Tailoring reworked and revived
With a shortage of craftspeople making skills harder to pass on, velveteen tabi have been in decline in recent years. To keep a good traditional Japanese product alive, we reworked the sewing from the ground up and brought this pair back.
